A Coaster Video Review by: Ted Cromwell (CoasterFanatic)
Now in it's fifth installment, Robb Alvey once again brings a collection of coaster/park
videos that feature the style and humor that you have come to expect. Coaster Expedition
Vol. 5 "Japan-A-Mania and More" follows Robb, Elissa, and Dan as they tackle Eastern culture
as well as take on some of the baddest creations in the land of the rising sun.
Disc 1
From rotating sushi bars, bongo drum video games, and sleeping train passengers to woodies,
loopers, and mega coasters, not much escapes the camera lens. You can feel yourself being
fully immersed into the culture by the end of the "Opening" segment and the feeling doesn't let
up through all the Japanese Park clips.
The video, which was shot in 2004, features footage of both world-class parks (Tokyo Disneyland)
to some that are a little rough around the edges (Nara Dreamland). The wide variety of parks
allows this video to showcase not only some of the best rides in Japan, but also the worse. In
many scenes, you will laugh yourself silly just taking in the cries for help that are blurted
out while riding some of the rougher attractions.
The music selection has more variety than some of the earlier Alvey videos, and I think that really helps to make this video appealing to a much larger audience. While the humor might not be for every age group, it is by no means vulgar. Most of the comments made during the video aren't much worse than anything you would hear on network TV. It is the humor and sillyness that make this video a one of a kind. So I wouldn't have it any other way.
In addition to the Japanese segments of the video, Robb has also included some videos from recent
travels in the US. Epcot, Dollywood, Lake Winnie, Sea World, Legoland, Hersheypark, Castles n'
Coasters, Six Flags Over Texas, Astroworld, WDW, Islands of Adventure, Busch Gardens and more are featured in the
last 6 segments of the video. The biggest highlight of this section is a short video that takes a peak
inside a part of Epcot that most people never see, a SegWay tour. Armed with a short training session
and 2 SegWays, Robb and Elissa takes us on a tour of the World Showcase in Epcot before the park
opens to the public. In this particular clip, the music fits the video to a tea.
In conclusion, the Japan-A-Mania video is a great addition to any enthusiasts collection and is a must have if you plan on attending the ACE/ECC Japan Trip later this year. For more information about the video as well as ordering information visit:
